TOP STORY

Biomimetic Hydrogels for Chondrogenic Differentiation of Human Mesenchymal Stem Cells to Neocartilage
In this study, a collagen mimetic peptide was synthesized and chemically incorporated into a poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) hydrogel through Michael addition chemistry. The PEG/collagen mimetic peptide hybrid hydrogel was used as a scaffold for encapsulation, proliferation and differentiation of human mesenchymal stem cells into neocartilage/chondrocytes. SCIENCE NEWS

Researchers Engineer Adult Stem Cells That Do Not Age, Overcoming a Major Barrier to Progress in Regenerative Medicine
Biomedical researchers have engineered adult stem cells that scientists can grow continuously in culture, a discovery that could speed development of cost-effective treatments for diseases including heart disease, diabetes, immune disorders and neurodegenerative diseases. [University at Buffalo Press Release]

Controlling Bone Formation to Prevent Osteoporosis
In this study, the gene regulatory protein Maf was found to promote mesenchymal cell generation of osteoblasts and suppress their generation of fat cells. [Press release from EurekAlert! discussing online prepublication in the Journal of Clinical Investigation]

CURRENT PUBLICATIONS (Ranked by Impact Factor of the Journal)

Maf Promotes Osteoblast Differentiation in Mice by Mediating the Age-Related Switch in Mesenchymal Cell Differentiation
Here, researchers show an age-related decrease in the expression of Maf in mouse mesenchymal cells, which regulated mesenchymal cell bifurcation into osteoblasts and adipocytes by cooperating with the osteogenic transcription factor Runx2 and inhibiting the expression of the adipogenic transcription factor Pparg. [ J Clin Invest]

Methyl-H3K9-Binding Protein MPP8 Mediates E-Cadherin Gene Silencing and Promotes Tumour Cell Motility and Invasion
To further understand the function of H3K9 methylation, researchers have identified and characterized MPP8 as a methyl-H3K9-binding protein. [EMBO J]

The Effect of Incorporation of Exogenous Stromal Cell-Derived Factor-1 Alpha Within a Knitted Silk-Collagen Sponge Scaffold on Tendon Regeneration
This study developed a bioactive knitted silk-collagen sponge scaffold by incorporation of exogenous stromal cell-derived factor-1 alpha, to enable selective migration and homing of cells for in situ tendon regeneration. [Biomaterials]

Implantation of Cardiac Progenitor Cells Using Self-Assembling Peptide Improves Cardiac Function After Myocardial Infarction
Implantation of various types of cells into the heart has been reported to be effective for heart failure, however, it is unknown what kinds of cells are most suitable for myocardial repair. To examine which types of cells are most effective, researchers injected cells-PuramatrixTM (PM) complex into the border area and overlaid the cell-PM patch on the myocardial infarction area. [J Mol Cell Cardiol]

Selective Isolation and Differentiation of a Stromal Population of Human Embryonic Stem Cells with Osteogenic Potential
The derivation of osteogenic cells from human embryonic stem cells (hESC) has been hampered by the absence of easy and reproducible protocols. hESC grown in feeder-free conditions, often show a sub population of fibroblast-like, stromal cells growing between the colonies. Thus, researchers examined the possibility that these cells represent a population of stromal (mesenchymal) stem cells. [Bone]

Evaluation of Cross-Linked Chitosan Microparticles for Bone Regeneration
The objective of this preliminary study was to evaluate the application of chitosan-based microparticles in bone regeneration in vivo. [J Tissue Eng Regen Med]

Early Combined Treatment with Sildenafil and Adipose-Derived Mesenchymal Stem Cells Preserves Heart Function in Rat Dilated Cardiomyopathy
Researchers investigated whether early combined autologous adipose-derived mesenchymal stem cell and sildenafil therapy offer an additive benefit in preserving heart function in rat dilated cardiomyopathy. [J Transl Med]
