The Impact of Hyperglycemia and the Presence of Encapsulated Islets on Oxygenation within a Bioartificial Pancreas in the Presence of Mesenchymal Stem Cells in a Diabetic Wistar Rat Model

This study investigates the potential of bone marrow versus adipose mesenchymal stem cells to potentiate the oxygenation of encapsulated islets in a subcutaneous bioartificial pancreas. [Biomaterials]

Sniffing Out a New Source of Stem Cells
New research in mice suggests that adult stem cells from immune system tissue in the smell-sensing region of the human nose (human olfactory ecto–mesenchymal stem cells) could provide a source of cells to treat brain disorders in which nerve cells are lost or irreparably damaged. [Press release from ScienceDaily discussing online prepublication in the Journal of Clinical Investigation]

Specific Adipose Stromal Cell Surface Receptor and Ligand Identified
Researchers found that expression of delta decorin in a well-characterized mouse preadipocyte cell line promoted proliferation and migration but suppressed lipid accumulation upon adipogenesis induction, which was resistin dependent. [Press release from Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology News discussing online prepublication in Cell Stem Cell]

Researchers Learn How Some Cells Are Turned Into Fat Cells In The Body
A new study has found that a cellular signaling pathway governs the differentiation of cells into fat tissue or smooth muscle, which lines the vascular system. [Press release from Mount Sinai School of Medicine discussing online prepublication in Developmental Cell]

CURRENT PUBLICATIONS (Ranked by Impact Factor of the Journal)

An Isoform of Decorin Is a Resistin Receptor on the Surface of Adipose Progenitor Cells
By merging phage display technology with fluorescence-activated cell sorting, researchers screened a combinatorial library for peptides that target mouse adipose stromal cells in vivo. [Cell Stem Cell]

Engraftment of Human Nasal Olfactory Stem Cells Restores Neuroplasticity in Mice with Hippocampal Lesions
Here researchers report that upon transplantation into mice with chemically induced hippocampal lesions, human olfactory ecto–mesenchymal stem cells migrated toward the sites of neural damage, where they differentiated into neurons. [J Clin Invest]

PDGFRβ Signaling Regulates Mural Cell Plasticity and Inhibits Fat Development
To explore the cues that regulate mural cell differentiation and homeostasis, researchers have generated conditional knockin mice with
activating mutations at the PDGFRβ locus. [Dev Cell]

Human Mesenchymal Stem Cell Differentiation to the Osteogenic or Adipogenic Lineage is Regulated by AMP-Activated Protein Kinase
The results provide a potential mechanism involving AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK) activation in osteogenic differentiation of hAMSC and suggest that commitment of human adipose tissue–derived mesenchymal stem cells to osteogenic or adipogenic lineage is governed by activation or inhibition of AMPK, respectively. [J Cell Physiol]

New Simple and Rapid Method for Purification of Mesenchymal Stem Cells from the Human Umbilical Cord Wharton Jelly
Researchers have developed a simple and rapid method for isolation of human umbilical cord matrix stem cells. [Tissue Eng Part A]

Odd-Skipped Related (Osr) Genes Regulate Differentiation of Embryonic Limb Mesenchyme and Bone Marrow Mesenchymal Stromal Cells
Using bone marrow stromal cells (BMSCs) isolated from chicken fetal long bones researchers show that Osr1 and Osr2 have an intrinsic role in BMSC differentiation similar to their role in early embryonic development. [Stem Cells Dev]

Adipose Stem Cells Originate from Perivascular Cells
Researchers show that adipose stem cells originate from perivascular cells and congregate around blood vessels. [Biol Cell]

Induction of Fracture Repair by Mesenchymal Cells Derived from Human Embryonic Stem Cells or Bone Marrow
Researchers evaluated the capacity of human embryonic stem cell (hESC)-derived mesenchymal stem/stromal cells to induce healing in a fracture non-union model in rats. [J Orthop Res]

Transplantation of Adipose-Derived Stem Cells for Peripheral Nerve Repair
Researchers suggest that adipose-derived stem cells (ADSC) can promote the repair of peripheral nerve injury, and the combination of ADSC and acellular nerve allograft transplantation is a new therapeutic method for long distant peripheral nerve defects. [Int J Mol Med]

Mesoblast’s Key Product Franchises Featured at Nomura Asia Equity Forum
Global regenerative medicine company, Mesoblast Limited, was featured at the 8th Nomura Asia Equity Forum being held in Singapore. [Mesoblast Limited Press Release]
