Dedifferentiation-Reprogrammed Mesenchymal Stem Cells with Improved Therapeutic Potential
Here researchers show that, after in vitro induction of neuronal differentiation and dedifferentiation, upon withdrawal of extrinsic factors, mesenchymal stem cells derived from bone marrow, which have already committed to neuronal lineage, revert to a primitive cell population retaining stem cell characteristics but exhibiting a reprogrammed phenotype distinct from their original counterparts. Characterization and Function of Histamine Receptors in Human Bone Marrow Stromal Cells
In this present study researchers demonstrated that human bone marrow stromal cells express H1, H2 and H4 histamine receptors and they respond to histamine stimulation with an increased IL-6 production both in vitro and in vivo. [Stem Cells] Abstract

Fibrosis and Adipogenesis Originate from a Common Mesenchymal Progenitor in Skeletal Muscle
Results indicate that mesenchymal progenitors are the main origin of not only fat accumulation but also fibrosis in skeletal muscle. [J Cell Sci] Abstract

Human Dermis Harbors Distinct Mesenchymal Stromal Cell Subsets
To shed light on the characteristics of human dermal mesenchymal stromal cells (MSCs), this study was designed to identify and isolate dermal MSCs by a specific marker expression profile, and subsequently rate their mesenchymal differentiation potential. [J Invest Dermatol] Abstract

The Sulfated Polysaccharide Fucoidan Stimulates Osteogenic Differentiation of Human Adipose-Derived Stem Cells
Sulfated polysaccharides, including heparin, modulate osteogenic differentiation of stem cells through the regulation of growth factor binding and signaling pathways. Here, researchers examined the effects of the sulfated polysaccharide fucoidan on osteogenic differentiation of human adipose-derived stem cells. [Stem Cells Dev] Abstract

Optical Mapping of Cryoinjured Rat Myocardium Grafted with Mesenchymal Stem Cells
Researchers hypothesize that mesenchymal stem cells delivered intramyocardially to cryoinjured myocardium can engraft but will not actively generate action potentials. [Am J Physiol Heart Circ Physiol] Abstract

In Vivo Formation of Bone and Hematopoietic Territories by Transplanted Human Bone Marrow Stromal Cells Generated in Medium with and without Osteogenic Supplements
Researchers conclude that for the substantial majority of donors, dexamethasone/ascorbic acid phosphate has no effect on the ability of bone marrow stromal cells to form bone and myelosupportive stroma in vivo. [J Tissue Eng Regen Med] Abstract

Combination of Activated Schwann Cells with Bone Mesenchymal Stem Cells: The Best Cell Strategy for Repair after Spinal Cord Injury in Rats
Researchers aimed to explore the repair effect of combined cell therapy using activated Schwann cells and bone mesenchymal stem cells in traumatic spinal cord injury in rats. [Regen Med] Abstract

In Vitro Differentiation and Biocompatibility of Mesenchymal Stem Cells on a Novel Platelet Releasate-Containing Injectable Composite
In this preliminary study, researchers introduced novel platelet releasate-containing alginate/calcium phosphate composites for this intervention therapy and evaluated them in vitro through mesenchymal stem cell biocompatibility and induction of osteochondral differentiation. [J Biomed Mater Res A] Abstract

Hepatitis B Virus Infection and Replication in Human Bone Marrow Mesenchymal Stem Cells
The aim of this study was to investigate the infection and replication of hepatitis B virus in cultures of human bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells. [Virol J] Abstract

Technology to Collect Stem Cells from Fat Tissue May Help Soldiers Recover from Traumatic Injuries
IKOTECH LLC and Techshot Inc. are working to develop equipment called Quadrasep™ that improves the collection of stem cells from adult adipose tissue. The U.S. Army Medical Research and Materiel Command selected the companies for a $730,000 contract to develop the technology. [IKOTECH LLC] Press Release

UCSF Training Program Attracts Best Minds in Developmental, Stem Cell Biology
Fittingly enough for a University where embryonic stem cells were first discovered in mice and named, the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF) has launched a pioneering program in Developmental and Stem Cell Biology. [University of California, San Francisco] Press Release
