The Effect of Heme Oxygenase-1 Complexed with Collagen on MSC Performance in the Treatment of Diabetic Ischemic Ulcer
Scientists explored whether over-expression of heme oxygenase-1 in bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) complexed with collagen play an important role in treatment of diabetic ischemic ulcers. [Biomaterials] Abstract

Shox2 Regulates Progression through Chondrogenesis in the Mouse Proximal Limb
In micromass cultures of Prrx1-Cre Shox2 mutant limb cells, investigators found that Shox2 deletion in undifferentiated mesenchymal cells results in increased BMP activity that enhances early chondrogenesis, but is insufficient to provoke chondrocyte maturation and hypertrophy. [J Cell Sci] Abstract

Intra-Arterial Infusion of Human Bone Marrow-Derived Mesenchymal Stem Cells Results in Transient Localization in the Brain after Cerebral Ischemia in Rats
Researchers studied the biodistribution of human bone marrow-derived mesenchymal stromal/stem cells after a direct infusion into the external carotid artery in rats. [Exp Neurol] Abstract

Co-Culture with Mesenchymal Stem Cells Enhances Metabolic Functions of Liver Cells in Bioartificial Liver System
Hepatoma-derived C3A cells were co-cultured with human placental mesenchymal stem cells in microspheres placed in a fluidized bioreactor. The secretion of albumin and urea, the expression of metabolizing enzymes at both transcriptional and translational levels and the drug metabolism functions of co-cultured C3A cells were determined. [Biotechnol Bioeng] Abstract

Human Elastin-Based Recombinant Biopolymers Improve Mesenchymal Stem Cell Differentiation
Two recombinant biopolymers inspired by human elastin were assessed as coating agents to prepare biomimetic surfaces for cell culture. These substrates are assayed for human bone marrow mesenchymal stem cell culture. [Macromol Biosci] Abstract

Mesenchymal Stem Cells Contribute to Endogenous FVIIIc Production
Researchers investigated whether human mesenchymal stem cells, ubiquitously present in different organs, could also contribute to human Factor VIII:c (FVIIIc) production. [J Cell Physiol] Abstract

Autocrine Fibroblast Growth Factor 2-Mediated Interactions between Human Mesenchymal Stem Cells and the Extracellular Matrix under Varying Oxygen Tension
Scientists examined the hypothesis that hypoxia influences human mesenchymal stromal or stem cell properties in part through the regulation of extracellular milieu characterized by the extracellular matrix matrices and the associated fibroblast growth factor-2. [J Cell Biochem] Abstract

Visible 532 nm Laser Irradiation of Human Adipose Tissue-Derived Stem Cells: Effect on Proliferation Rates, Mitochondria Membrane Potential and Autofluorescence
Researchers reported the in vitro effect of 532-nm Nd:YAG laser on proliferation, mitochondrial activity of mesenchymal stem cells on the autofluorescence emission at wavelengths associated with nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide and flavoproteins. [Laser Surg Med] Abstract

Fibroblast Growth Factor 2 Inhibits Up-Regulation of Bone Morphogenic Proteins and Their Receptors during Osteoblastic Differentiation of Human Mesenchymal Stem Cells
Investigators hypothesized that fibroblast growth factor 2 might influence human mesenchymal stem cell osteoblastic differentiation by modulating expressions of bone morphogenetic proteins and their receptors. [Biochem Biophys Res Commun] Abstract

Comparison of Mesenchymal Stem Cell Proliferation and Differentiation between Biomimetic and Electrochemical Coatings on Different Topographic Surfaces
Results showed that mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) proliferated more when cultured on the nano-sized biomimetic coatings compared to uncoated and electrochemically coated discs. MSCs also proliferated more on polished surfaces than on sand-blasted and or electrochemical coatings. [J Mater Sci Mater Med] Abstract

Regeneration of Articular Cartilage by Adipose Tissue Derived Mesenchymal Stem Cells: Perspectives from Stem Cell Biology and Molecular Medicine
The authors reviewed the most up-to-date articles utilizing adipose-derived stem cells (ASCs) for cartilage regeneration in basic and translational research. This review covers differentiation of adipose tissue derived mesenchymal stem cells into chondrocytes, increased cartilage formation by co-culture of ASCs with chondrocytes and enhancing chondrogenic differentiation of ASCs by gene manipulation. [J Cell Physiol] Abstract

IntelliCell BioSciences Announces the Manufacture of Stromal Vascular Fraction Cells from Non-Living Donated Adipose Tissue
IntelliCell BioSciences, Inc. announced that it has been successful in manufacturing stromal vascular cells from non-living adipose tissue from a deceased tissue donor.  These cells have been grown in culture and demonstrated to have the correct CD antibody markers for mesenchymal stem cells and other cells that are consistent with stromal vascular fraction cells. Pioneering iPS Cell Scientist Kazutoshi Takahashi Receives NYSCF – Robertson Prize in Stem Cell Research
The New York Stem Cell Foundation (NYSCF) will award a Japanese scientist with the NYSCF – Robertson Prize for his extraordinary achievements in translational stem cell research. Dr. Takahashi was lead author on a series of landmark papers that described reprogramming adult cells into induced pluripotent stem (iPS) cells, which were published while he was a postdoctoral researcher in Shinya Yamanaka’s, MD, PhD, laboratory at Kyoto University.
