TOP STORY
Pro-Angiogenic and Pro-Survival Functions of Glucose in Human Mesenchymal Stem Cells upon Transplantation
The authors demonstrated that human mesenchymal stem cells could endure sustained near-anoxia conditions only in the presence of glucose. In this in vitro cell model, the protein expressions of Hif-1 alpha and angiogenic factors were up-regulated by the presence of glucose. [Stem Cells] Abstract

Injectable Bone Tissue Engineering Using Expanded Mesenchymal Stem Cells
Scientists investigated whether injectable tissue-engineered bone composed of mesenchymal stem cells and platelet rich plasma was able to regenerate functional bone in alveolar deficiencies. [Stem Cells] Abstract

Characterization of Mesenchymal Stem Cell Subpopulations from Human Amniotic Membrane with Dissimilar Osteoblastic Potential
Researchers aimed to isolate homogeneous amniotic membrane human fetal mesenchymal stem cells subpopulations based on the co-expression of surface markers. [Stem Cell Dev] Abstract

A Soluble G-CSF Decoy Receptor as a Novel Tool to Increase Hematopoietic Cell Homing and Reconstitution in Mice
The authors provide evidences that homing is severely impaired post exposure to ionizing radiation in mice, an effect they found was time-dependent and could be partially rescued using mesenchymal stromal cell therapy. [Stem Cell Dev] Abstract

Human Serum Promotes Osteogenic Differentiation of Human Dental Pulp Stem Cells In Vitro and In Vivo
Scientists demonstrated that human serum is a suitable alternative to fetal calf serum; indeed its addition to culture medium induces a high human dental pulp stem cell proliferation rate and improves the in vitro osteogenic differentiation. [PLoS One] Full Article

Compression-Induced Alignment and Elongation of Human Mesenchymal Stem Cell (hMSC) in 3D Collagen Constructs Is Collagen Concentration Dependent
The authors investigated the collagen concentration dependence of the compression-induced hMSC organization. Results demonstrated that the compression-induced alignment and elongation of hMSCs exhibited a biphasic dose-dependent relationship with collagen concentration, and associated well with both collagen ligand density and elastic modulus of the constructs. [J Biomed Mater Res A] Abstract

Efficacy of Mesoporous Silica Nanoparticles in Delivering BMP-2 Plasmid DNA for In Vitro Osteogenic Stimulation of Mesenchymal Stem Cells
Researchers report the ability of aminated mesoporous silica nanoparticles with large mesopore space and positive-charged surface to deliver genes within rat mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs). The amine functionalized inorganic nanoparticles were complexed with bone morphogenetic protein-2 (BMP-2) plasmid DNA to study their transfection efficiency in MSCs. [J Biomed Mater Res A] Abstract

Novel Application of Stem Cell-Derived Factors for Periodontal Regeneration
The effect of conditioned medium from cultured mesenchymal stem cells (MSC-CM) on periodontal regeneration was evaluated. In vitro, MSC-CM stimulated migration and proliferation of dog MSCs and dog periodontal ligament cells. [Biochem Biophys Res Commun] Abstract

Human Mesenchymal Stem Cells Reduce Lung Injury in Immunocompromised Mice but Not in Immunocompetent Mice
The authors compared the efficacy of human mesenchymal stem cells in preventing bleomycin-induced lung injury in immunocompromised SCID and immunocompetent C57Bl/6 mice. [Respiration] Abstract

REVIEWS

Anti-Donor Immune Responses Elicited by Allogeneic Mesenchymal Stem Cells: What Have We Learned so Far?
The authors critically review available experimental data to determine whether good in vivo evidence exists in support of the ‘immune privileged’ status of allogeneic mesenchymal stem cells. [Immunol Cell Biol] Abstract
INDUSTRY NEWS

Precision StemCell’s Neural Reprogrammed Stem Cell Therapy Yields Better-than-Expected Results for ALS Patients
More than 75 percent of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) patients who received neural reprogrammed stem cell therapy have shown a positive response to the procedure. The groundbreaking technique was introduced to the United States this year by Precision StemCell. [PR Newswire Association LLC] Press Release

Fate Therapeutics Strengthens Leadership Position in the Development of Wnt-Based Protein Therapeutics
After several years of systematically applied structural prediction, rational design and protein engineering, Fate Therapeutics has generated several proprietary Wnt-protein drug candidates suitable for advancement toward clinical development and validated their therapeutic potential in various in vivo preclinical models.
