Scientists investigated the endothelial differentiation capacity of mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) derived from bone tissue. They found that fetal pre-osteoblast and adult trabecular bone-derived MSCs express similar surface markers as bone marrow MSCs and can differentiate into adipocytes, osteoblasts, and chondrocytes. Mesenchymal Stem Cells Ameliorate Experimental Peritoneal Fibrosis by Suppressing Inflammation and Inhibiting Transforming Growth Factor-β1 Signaling
Since peritoneal fibrosis is a serious complication of peritoneal dialysis, researchers tested whether mesenchymal stem cells suppress this using a chlorhexidine gluconate model in rats. [Kidney Int] Full Article

Cell Size and Velocity of Injection Are Major Determinants of the Safety of Intracarotid Stem Cell Transplantation
Glial-restricted precursors and mesenchymal stem cells were transplanted into the internal carotid artery of rats, using a microcatheter. Magnetic resonance imaging was used to detect post-transplantation complications, including the development of stroke, for the following experimental variables: cell size, cell dose, cell infusion velocity, delay between artery occlusion and cell infusion, discordant versus concordant xenografting, and intracarotid transplantation with preserved versus compromised blood flow. High Aminopeptidase N/CD13 Levels Characterize Human Amniotic Mesenchymal Stem Cells and Drive Their Increased Adipogenic Potential in Obese Women
Researchers enrolled 16 obese and 7 normal weight control-women at delivery and 32 not pregnant women. Human amniotic mesenchymal stem cells were phenotyped by flow cytometry; several maternal and newborn clinical and biochemical parameters were also measured. [Stem Cell Dev] Abstract

Priming Mesenchymal Stem Cells Boosts Stem Cell Therapy to Treat Myocardial Infarction
Investigators showed that priming mesenchymal stem cells towards cardiomyogenic lineage enhances their beneficial effects in vivo as a treatment option for acute phase myocardial infarction. [J Cell Mol Med]

Mesenchymal Stem Cells Derived from Adipose Tissue vs Bone Marrow: In Vitro Comparison of Their Tropism towards Gliomas
Commercial and primary culture adipose-derived mesenchymal stem cells (AMSCs) and commercial bone marrow-derived mesenchymal stem cells (BMSCs) demonstrated no statistically significant difference in their migration towards glioma conditioned media in vitro. There was statistically significant difference in the proliferation rate of both commercial AMSCs and BMSCs as compared to primary culture AMSCs, suggesting primary cultures have a slower growth rate than commercially available cell lines. Researchers screened five different commercially available serum-free media for their ability to support the growth and expansion of pre-isolated undifferentiated bone marrow-derived mesenchymal stromal or stem cells and compared the results with cells grown in standard fetal bovine serum-containing medium as control. Scientists investigated the biological effects of glioma stromal mesenchymal stem-like cells (GS-MSLCs) on glioma cancer stem cells (gCSCs), testing the hypothesis that GS-MSLCs alter the biological characteristics of gCSCs. [Int J Oncol] Abstract

Three Years after Transplants in Human Mandibles, Histological and In-Line Holotomography Revealed that Stem Cells Regenerated a Compact Rather than a Spongy Bone: Biological and Clinical Implications
Mesenchymal stem cells deriving from dental pulp differentiate into osteoblasts capable of producing bone. In previous studies, the authors extensively demonstrated that, when seeded on collagen I scaffolds, these cells can be conveniently used for the repair of human mandible defects. Here, they assessed the stability and quality of the regenerated bone and vessel network three years after the grafting intervention, with conventional procedures and in-line holotomography, an advanced phase-imaging method using synchrotron radiation that offers improved sensitivity toward low-absorbing structures.
