Systems Biology Approach to Identify Alterations in the Stem Cell Reservoir of Subcutaneous Adipose Tissue in a Rat Model of Diabetes: Effects on Differentiation Potential and Function
Researchers investigated the effects of diabetes on adipose-derived stem cells (ASCs) and whether these effects might limit the therapeutic potential of autologous ASCs. [Diabetologia] Abstract

PUBLICATIONS (Ranked by impact factor of the journal)
miR-134-Mediated β1 Integrin Expression and Function in Mesenchymal Stem Cells
Researchers investigated the function of microRNA (miR)-134 in integrin regulation in mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs). In MSCs, miR-134 post-transcriptionally regulated β1 integrin expression. [Biochim Biophys Acta] Abstract

Hypoxia, Leptin and VEGF Stimulate Vascular Endothelial Cell Differentiation of Human Adipose Tissue-Derived Stem Cells
Human adipose tissue derived stem cells (hASCs) differentiated into adipocytes after cultivation in adipogenic medium. Exposure of hASCs for 10 days under hypoxia in combination with leptin increased the percentage of CD31+ endothelial cells as well as CD31, VE-Cadherin, Flk-1, Tie2, von Willebrand factor and endothelial cell nitric oxide synthase mRNA expression. [Stem Cells Dev] Abstract

miR-27 Targets Prohibitin and Impairs Adipocyte Differentiation and Mitochondrial Function in Human Adipose-Derived Stem Cells
Scientists identified that the levels of both microRNA (miR)-27a and miR-27b were downregulated following adipogenic induction of human adipose-derived stem cells, while the mRNA level of prohibitin was upregulated. [J Biol Chem] Abstract | Full Article

Inhibitory Effect and Mechanism of Mesenchymal Stem Cells on Liver Cancer Cells
Scientists investigated the inhibitory effect and mechanism of mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) on human hepatoma HepG2 cells using co-culture and conditioned medium system and animal transplantation model. The HepG2 cells were co-cultured with MSCs or treated with conditional media derived from MSCs cultures in vitro. [Tumor Biol] Abstract

Silica Coating of the Pore Walls of a Microporous Polycaprolactone Membrane to be Used in Bone Tissue Engineering
Researchers showed that silica forms a thin coating layer homogeneously distributed over the pore walls when sol-gel reaction is catalyzed by hydrochloric acid, while it forms submicron spherical particles when using basic catalyzer. Some physical properties and the viability and osteoblastic differentiation of bone marrow rat mesenchymal stem cells cultured on pure and hybrid membranes were studied. [J Biomed Mater Res A] Abstract

Chondrogenic Potential of Stem Cells Derived from Adipose Tissue: A Powerful Pharmacological Tool
Scientists characterized the chondrogenic potential of human Multipotent Adipose-Derived Stem (hMADS) cells, and their potential use as pharmacological tool. hMADS cells are able to synthesize matrix proteins including COMP, Aggrecan and type II Collagen. [Biochem Biophys Res Commun] Abstract

Pollen-Induced Antigen Presentation by Mesenchymal Stem Cells and T Cells from Allergic Rhinitis
Researchers investigated the immune effects of mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) on allergen-stimulated lymphocytes from allergic rhinitis (AR) subjects. In contrast to subjects with allergic asthma, MSCs caused a significant increase in the proliferation of antigen-challenged lymphocytes from AR subjects. [Clin Transl Immunol] Full Article

Human Bone Marrow Mesenchymal Stem Cells Regulate Biased DNA Segregation in Response to Cell Adhesion Asymmetry
Researchers investigated cell adhesion geometries as a potential parameter by plating human mesenchymal stem cells from healthy donors on fibronectin-coated micropatterns. [Cell Rep]

Lysophosphatidic Acid Protects Human Mesenchymal Stromal Cells from Differentiation-Dependent Vulnerability to Apoptosis
Scientists examined the ability of lysophosphatidic acid to abrogate serum deprivation and hypoxia-induced apoptosis in human mesenchymal stromal cells (MSC) at increasing stages of osteogenic differentiation in vitro and assessed MSC survival in vivo. [Tissue Eng Part A] Abstract

GFOGER-Modified MMP-Sensitive Polyethylene Glycol (PEG) Hydrogels Induce Chondrogenic Differentiation of Human Mesenchymal Stem Cells
Interactions of human mesenchymal stem cells (hMSCs) with the triple helical collagen mimetic, GPC(GPP)5-GFOGER-(GPP)5GPC-NH2, and the fibronectin adhesion peptide, RGD, were studied in degradable or non-degradable PEG gels formed by Michael-type addition chemistry. [Tissue Eng Part A] Abstract

REVIEWS
Adipocytes and the Regulation of Bone Remodeling: A Balancing Act
The majority of in vitro and in vivo data suggest that bone marrow-derived multipotent stromal cells differentiate into adipocytes or osteoblasts in a reciprocal manner. This review focuses on past and current literature examining the mechanisms governing the adipose-bone interface. [Calcif Tissue Int] Abstract
