An Osteopontin-Integrin Interaction Plays a Critical Role in Directing Adipogenesis and Osteogenesis by Mesenchymal Stem Cells
Scientists revealed that blockade of osteopontin (OPN) function promoted robust adipogenic differentiation, while inhibiting osteogenic differentiation. Re-expression of OPN restored a normal balance between adipogenesis and osteogenesis in OPN-/- mesenchymal stem cells. [Stem Cells] Full Article

Inhibition of Mesenchymal Stromal Cells by Pre-Activated Lymphocytes and Their Culture Media
The interplay between clinical grade mesenchymal stromal cells (MSCs) and pre-activated donor lymphocytes or selected lymphocyte subsets was studied in vitro. Autologous Mesenchymal Stromal Cell Infusion as Adjunct Treatment in Patients with Multidrug and Extensively Drug-Resistant Tuberculosis: An Open-Label Phase I Safety Trial
Researchers assessed the safety of infusion of autologous mesenchymal stromal cells (MSCs) as an adjunct treatment in patients with tuberculosis. 30 patients with microbiologically confirmed multidrug-resistant or extensively drug-resistant tuberculosis were treated with single-dose autologous bone marrow-derived MSCs, within 4 weeks of the start of antituberculosis-drug treatment in a specialist center in Minsk, Belarus. Athersys, Inc. announced that it has been granted patents from the Japan Patent Office for several inventions involving its proprietary cell therapy technology. Patent No. 5398941 covers non-embryonic, multipotent stem cells, such as MultiStem, and applies to all therapeutic applications.
