TOP STORY
RUNX1 Is Essential for Mesenchymal Stem Cell Proliferation and Myofibroblast Differentiation
Investigators report the characterization of normal human prostate-derived mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) and the TGF-β1-regulated pathways that modulate MSC proliferation and myofibroblast differentiation. Human prostate MSCs combined with prostate cancer cells expressing TGF-β1 resulted in commitment to myofibroblasts. [Proc Natl Acad Sci USA] Abstract | Full Article

PUBLICATIONS (Ranked by impact factor of the journal)
Combined Inhibition of TNFα and IL-17 as Therapeutic Opportunity for Treatment in Rheumatoid Arthritis: Development and Characterization of a Novel Bispecific Antibody
Researchers investigated whether combined inhibition of TNFα and IL-17 has additive/synergistic effects in suppression of mesenchymal cell activation in vitro and inflammation and tissue destruction in arthritis in vivo. [Arthritis Rheum] Abstract

Mesenchymal TGF-β Signaling Orchestrates Dental Epithelial Stem Cell Homeostasis through Wnt Signaling
T growth factor-β (TGF-β) type II receptor (Tgfbr2) was specifically deleted within the postnatal dental papilla mesenchyme. Investigators found that mesenchymal Tgfbr2 disruption led to upregulated expression of Wnt5a and downregulated expression of MFgf3/10 in the mesenchyme, both of which synergistically enhanced Lrp5/6-β-catenin signaling in the cervical loop epithelium. [Stem Cells] Abstract

Mesenchymal Stromal Cells Engineered to Produce IGF-I by Recombinant Adenovirus Ameliorate Liver Fibrosis in Mice
Investigators analyzed the effect of applying insulin growth factor like-I (IGF-I) overexpressing mouse bone marrow-derived mesenchymal stromal cells on hepatic fibrosis. [Stem Cells Dev] Abstract

Transcriptomic Portrait of Human Mesenchymal Stromal/Stem Cells Isolated from Bone Marrow and Placenta
The potential utility of mesenchymal stromal/stem cells (MSCs) is strongly investigated in the field of regenerative medicine and cell therapy, although many questions about their molecular identity remain uncertain. The authors present a transcriptomic portrait of the human mesenchymal stromal/stem cells isolated from bone marrow and placenta. [BMC Genomics] Abstract | Full Article

Peripheral Blood-Derived Mesenchymal Stromal Cells Promote Angiogenesis via Paracrine Stimulation of Vascular Endothelial Growth Factor Secretion in the Equine Model
Researchers examined the presence of angiogenic stimulating factors in the conditioned medium of peripheral blood-derived equine mesenchymal stromal cells and studied their in vitro effect on angiogenesis-related endothelial cell behavior, including proliferation and vessel formation. [Stem Cells Transl Med] Abstract

Umbilical Cord Wharton’s Jelly Repeated Culture System: A New Device and Method for Obtaining Abundant Mesenchymal Stem Cells for Bone Tissue Engineering
Investigators designed and evaluated an umbilical cord Wharton’s jelly repeated culture device. Using this device, human umbilical cord Wharton’s jelly mesenchymal stem cells were obtained from the repeated cultures and their quantities and biological characteristics were compared. [PLoS One] Full Article

Therapeutic Effects of Amniotic Fluid-Derived Mesenchymal Stromal Cells on Lung Injury in Rats with Emphysema
Researchers analyzed the phenotypic characteristics, differentiation potential, and karyotype of rat amniotic fluid-derived mesenchymal stromal cells (rAFDMSCs), which were isolated from pregnant Sprague-Dawley rats. The ability of rAFMSCs to differentiate was measured, and the apoptosis of type II alveolar epithelial cells was evaluated. [Respir Res] Abstract | Full Article

Comparison of Therapeutic Characteristics of Islet Cell Transplantation Simultaneous with Pancreatic Mesenchymal Stem Cell Transplantation in Rats with Type 1 Diabetes Mellitus
Scientists investigated the effect of pancreatic mesenchymal stem cell transplantation simultaneous with islet cell transplantation on islet liveliness and thus on the treatment of diabetes in type 1 diabetic rats.
[Stem Cell Rev Rep]
Abstract

Bone Marrow Mesenchymal Stromal Cells Induce Proliferative, Cytokinic and Molecular Changes During the T Cell Response: The Importance of the IL-10/CD210 Axis
Researchers investigated the potential of bone marrow mesenchymal stromal cells to modulate T cell activation, proliferation, cytokine secretion and immunophenotype. [Stem Cell Rev Rep] Abstract

Mesenchymal Stromal Cells Enhance Wound Healing by Ameliorating Impaired Metabolism in Diabetic Mice
The authors investigated whether the therapeutic effects on wounds was associated with metabolic alterations by paracrine action of mesenchymal stromal cells (MSCs). MSCs were then evaluated for their therapeutic potential in vivo using an excisional cutaneous wound model in mice with diabetes. [Cytotherapy] Abstract

The Effects of Poly(Dimethylsiloxane) Surface Silanization on the Mesenchymal Stem Cell Fate
Researchers employed (3-aminopropyl) triethoxy silane (APTES) and cross-linker glutaraldehyde (GA) chemistry to immobilize collagen type 1 on poly(dimethylsiloxane) (PDMS). Significant changes of the native PDMS surface properties were observed with the proposed surface functionalization, and mesenchymal stem cell adhesion was improved on PDMS surfaces modified with APTES + GA + Protein.
