NOX1-Induced Accumulation of Reactive Oxygen Species in Abdominal Fat-Derived Mesenchymal Stromal Cells Impinges on Long-Term Proliferation
Repeated attempts to produce long-term proliferative cultures of rat abdominal adipose stem cells (aASCs) under normal oxygen concentration were unsuccessful. The authors set to examine the events controlling this cytostasis of aASCs and found that it resulted from overproduction of reactive oxygen species that led to apoptosis. Phenotypic and Functional Characterization of Long-Term Cryopreserved Human Adipose-Derived Stem Cells
Human adipose-derived stem cells (ASCs) were preserved for three months in different combinations of cryoprotective agents. Cryopreserved ASCs maintained high cell viability comparable with standard cryomedium, with normal cell phenotype and proliferation rate. Cryopreserved ASCs also maintained their differentiation capability and showed an enhanced expression level of stemness markers. [Sci Rep] Full Article

Microencapsulated Equine Mesenchymal Stromal Cells Promote Cutaneous Wound Healing In Vitro
Researchers evaluated the in vitro effects of equine mesenchymal stromal cells (MSC)-derived conditioned medium (CM), containing all factors secreted by MSC, on equine dermal fibroblasts, a cell type critical for successful wound healing, and explored the potential of microencapsulated equine MSC to deliver CM to wounded cells in vitro. Effect of Organic Acids on Calcium Phosphate Nucleation and Osteogenic Differentiation of Human Mesenchymal Stem Cells on Peptide Functionalized Nanofibers
Scientists investigated the effect of organic acids on calcium phosphate (CaP) nucleation on nanofiber microsheets functionalized with a glutamic acid peptide and osteogenic differentiation of human mesenchymal stem cells seeded on the CaP-nucleated microsheets. [Langmuir] Abstract

The Effects of Naproxen on Chondrogenesis of Human Mesenchymal Stem Cells
Scientists determined the effect of Naproxen on collagen type X gene expression and investigated the intracellular signaling pathways that mediate such effect in normal human mesenchymal stem cells during chondrogenesis. [Tissue Eng Part A] Abstract

Human Vascular Wall Mesenchymal Stromal Cells Contribute to Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm Pathogenesis through an Impaired Immunomodulatory Activity and Increased Levels of Matrix Metalloproteinase-9
Investigators verified the presence and contribution of mesenchymal stromal cells (MSCs) to aneurysmal tissue remodeling. MSCs were successfully isolated from the abdominal aortic aneurysm wall of 12 male patients and were found to express mesenchymal and stemness markers. [Circ J] Full Article

Simvastatin Modulates Mesenchymal Stromal Cell Proliferation and Gene Expression
The authors showed that simvastatin negatively modulates mesenchymal stromal cell (MSC) proliferation in a dose-dependent way and regulates the expression of proliferation-related genes. They observed that simvastatin increased the percentage of a subset of smaller MSCs, which also were actively proliferating. [PLoS One] Full Article

TAp63γ and ΔNp63β Promote Osteoblastic Differentiation of Human Mesenchymal Stem Cells: Regulation by Vitamin D3 Metabolites
Researchers compared the endogenous expression of p63 isoforms (TA- and ΔNp63) and splice variants (p63α, -β, -γ), in naive human mesenchymal stem cells (hMSC) and during osteoblastic differentiation of hMSC. TAp63α and -β were the predominant p63 variants in naive, proliferating hMSC. In contrast, under osteoblastic differentiation conditions, expression of p63 changed from the TAp63α and -β to the TAp63γ and ΔNp63β variants. [PLoS One] Full Article
