Scientists have developed a method to direct mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) to the bone surface by attaching a synthetic high-affinity and specific peptidomimetic ligand against integrin α4β1 on the MSC surface to a bisphosphonate that has a high affinity for bone. Researchers treated mice with 5-fluorouracil (5-FU) to isolate a quiescent and undifferentiated mesenchymal stromal cell (MSC) population from the bone marrow.
