Comparison of Allogeneic vs Autologous Bone Marrow-Derived Mesenchymal Stem Cells Delivered by Transendocardial Injection in Patients with Ischemic Cardiomyopathy: The POSEIDON Randomized Trial
In this early-stage study of patients with ischemic cardiomyopathy, transendocardial injection of allogeneic and autologous mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) without a placebo control were both associated with low rates of treatment-emergent serious adverse events, including immunologic reactions. In aggregate, MSC injection favorably affected patient functional capacity, quality of life, and ventricular remodeling. [JAMA]  Full Article | Press Release

Exosomes Mediate the Cytoprotective Action of Mesenchymal Stromal Cells on Hypoxia-Induced Pulmonary Hypertension
Scientists fractionated mouse mesenchymal stromal cell-conditioned media to identify the biologically-active component affecting in vivo hypoxic signaling and determined that exosomes suppressed the hypoxic pulmonary influx of macrophages and the induction of pro-inflammatory and pro-proliferative mediators, including monocyte chemoattractant protein-1 and hypoxia-inducible mitogenic factor, in the murine model of hypoxic pulmonary hypertension. Arsenic Inhibits the Adipogenic Differentiation of Mesenchymal Stem Cells by Down-Regulating Peroxisome Proliferator-Activated Receptor Gamma and CCAAT Enhancer-Binding Proteins
Researchers reported that arsenic inhibits the adipogenic differentiation of human mesenchymal stem cells. Arsenic reduced the formation of lipid droplets and the expression of adipogenesis-related proteins, such as CCAAT enhancer binding protein, peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor- gamma, and adipocyte fatty acid-binding protein aP2. Campus leaders, dignitaries, scientists, and engineers gathered at UC Santa Barbara (UCSB) to celebrate the completion of a dream: 10,000 square feet of renovated laboratory space devoted to stem cell research. This was the grand opening ceremony and ribbon-cutting in celebration of UCSB’s Center for Stem Cell Biology and Engineering, part of the Neuroscience Research Institute.
